Anime: The Spring 2014 season looks……interesting.
I’m going to preface this post with the following statement:
I don’t talk much about anime on this blog and I hope to correct this to some small degree.
OK first off I am a rather large anime fan, and subsequently decided to see what was coming up in the next few weeks with the beginning of the Spring 2014 season close at hand. And I have to say I am surprised, there is a really strange mix of stuff.
There is the usual mix of high school comedy romance, the weird and slightly perverted ‘Soulless introvert learns about human emotion via the medium of breasts’ series (YES FOR THE UNINITIATED THIS IS A THING), and the altogether predictable Shounen lineup to contend with.
THEN, there are a few highly interesting shows that I want to talk about, both good and TERRIBLE looking:
- Ping Pong The Animation
I want to start by talking about Ping Pong: The Animation. I am not normally a fan of sports anime or manga, yet what singles this one out to me is its interesting semi-realistic art style. Not much has been released about this series yet but the promo image and brief trailer has my interest peaked.[x]
- Seikoku no Dragonar
Next up is Seikoku no Dargonar, on the face of it is an interesting premise, The show follows a group of students enrolled at a school that teaches dragon taming. While this is not the most original sounding storyline, there are worse things out there. BUT….BUT…Upon watching the trailer this anime shows its true colours, with scenes that verge on tentacle rape, vast amounts of nudity, and one shot which I’m pretty sure is just people eating ice cream on dragons while their clothes fall off, this show is a definite avoid on my list![x]
- Sidonia no Kishi
This is an anime I am genuinely excited for! The plot follows young fighter pilots on the Human Seed Ship Sidonia, one of the last populations of humanity after the destruction of the solar system 1000 years previous. The pilots have one job, protect humanity from extinction. This plot line, while pretty standard for a mecha Anime still intrigues me, and I hope that it highlights some of the more interesting aspects of living on Sidonia. The trailer also fills me with hope with some of the more beautiful animation that I have seen in recent years. This combined with a unique art style makes this a definite on my to watch list. [x]
- Atelier Escha & Logy ~Tasogare no Sora no Renkinjutsushi~
Supposedly adapted from the game of the same name this title is somewhat of an enigma to me. The world is apparently facing imminent doom at the hands of an event known as the ‘Dusk End’. In order to try to halt the apocalypse, the people of the land are attempting to bring back the lost art of Alchemy, and has gathered all such learning into one great university city known as ‘Central’ . The story follows a young Alchemist called Logy, who, recently graduated from Central, has been assigned a job at the Development Department in a small frontier town. There he meets Escha, a young woman who is already working in said department. Together they aim to use their Alchemy to best further the goals of their department. Now all in all this fascinates me, but it could go either way. Having not played the game it is my hope that what develops is an interesting plot line. We shall see, as this anime is definitely on my watch list.
There are many more shows out this coming season, and several more on my to watch list, but these are the few that I wanted to talk urgently about. If you want to look at said upcoming season then please direct yourself to the source of these images here [x]
